Welcome to the SmArt network

SmArt is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) on SMall ARTery remodelling, funded by the European Commission and starting October 1, 2009. The network consists of 10 partner organizations (9 academic groups and one industrial) from 7 European countries specialized in the biology of vascular cells and their surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM). 13 early stage researchers are supported for 3 years and 1 experienced researcher for 2 years.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the European population and represent a great burden of suffering and costs. When subjected to physiological and pathophysiological forces the blood vessels undergo transformations in wall shape caused by alterations in ECM and cellular composition. This vascular remodelling occurs specifically in small arteries and arterioles, resulting in extreme changes in size and function. Especially in hypertensive or diabetic patients this results in organ dysfunction and progression of vascular disease.
The primary scientific objective of the SmArt network is to determine the molecular mechanisms of cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions in small artery remodeling, aiming to aid in the development of new therapies. The following key areas are in focus: 1) Signalling mechanisms in endothelial and smooth muscle cells, 2) Structural and functional rearrangements in the vessel wall, 3) Role of recruited cells in remodelling.
The major training objective is to provide integrated theoretical and practical multidisciplinary training for young researchers in the complex field of vascular biology. SmArt will promote the careers of young investigators by providing them multidisciplinary expertise in a field of vascular biology with great potential for the future.
